The production's exquisite refinement made a lasting impression; it is being revived today at the Opera Comique. From the day it was first performed at Louis XIV's court, as was customary, Atys has been called 'The King's opera'. It was known that the king, who had been closely involved in the preparation of the opera, enjoyed humming some of its airs. It was consequently a triumph when it opened to the public at the Théâtre du Palais Royal in April. Each revival was equally successful, as were the parodies - a clear sign of popularity. With its elegant form and expressive music, the inventiveness of the dances and the unprecedented dramatic intensity, Atys was also the first opera whose libretto focused on love, and the first Tragédie Lyrique where the hero died onstage. It introduced a poetry of feelings into the theatre of conventions; the sufferings of the nymph Sangaride and the shepherd Atys, the jealousy of the goddess Cybèle and the unforgiving dictates of her cult, illustrate the confusion of young love confronted with a world of intransigeance and sacrifice.

It was composed in 1686 on a libretto by Philippe Quinault and is often considered as the masterwork of both artists. The argument of the tragedy is borrowed from Tasso's 'Jerusalem Delivered' (Gerusalemme liberata) and tells of the witch Armide's unrequited love for the knight Renaud.

One of the most original and exciting bands to emerge in years, Get The Blessing was formed by drummer Clive Deamer and bassist Jim Barr, rythm section of trip-hop's legendary band Portishead. Get The Blessing have stormed onto the scene, taking riffs and rhythms from rock, punk and dance music and artfully welding them onto inventive wild jazz improvisations, all colliding in a joyous celebration of sound. With trumpeter Pete Judge and saxophonist Jake McMurchie from Superfurry Animals completing the line-up, Get The Blessing's rocking tunes and snappy arrangements create a genre-bending blend of sounds that is all their own, flirting slyly with jazz while pounding the dancefloor with their 'gloriously powerful sound' (BBC Music Magazine). Get The Blessing wear their jazz credentials lightly but defiantly. The intricate but rock-solid rhythm section forms the gloss that holds Get the Blessing together, with the dual saxophone and trumpet frontline working with the bass to create melodies and harmonies.

His sensitivity, impeccable technique and art of the trio, along with his interest in all strands of contemporary jazz make Fred Hersch a complete jazz pianist. Brad Mehldau, who studied with him in the 1980's, is full of praise for this brilliant musician, whose name should be better known in Europe.
